Evernote notes import from an .enex export.

Before you start

Export notebooks from Evernote as .enex files. Import them in Settings Advanced Evernote.

Export per notebook rather than everything at once. Large exports are slower and harder to judge.

What comes across

Note titles as lists, note bodies as things, and the images inside a note as photo things.

Photos

Images come across as photo things, each one in the place it held in the note. Evernote packs them inside the .enex file, so there is no second file to find and no extra step.

Worth knowing before a big import:

  • An import carries up to 100 images, and skips any single image over 8MB. The preview counts them before you approve, and a warning names any that were skipped.
  • Images upload one at a time, so a picture-heavy notebook takes noticeably longer than a text-only one. The progress line counts them down.
  • Text inside each image is read as it uploads, so a photographed receipt or whiteboard stays findable by what it says. See photos.

Be selective

Evernote accounts tend to be a decade of web clips and receipts. Importing all of it produces a NewTwos account that is mostly archive, which buries what you write now.

Import the notebooks you actually reference. Leave the rest exported on disk, where it remains searchable if you ever need it.

Tips

  • For an attachment that is not an image, such as a PDF you genuinely need, photograph or screenshot the page and let the text be read from the image.
  • Import one notebook first. It is the fastest way to see whether this is worth doing at all.
