Coming from another app

What translates from the app you are leaving, and what deliberately does not.

Why you'd care

Most migrations fail for the same reason: people rebuild their old system inside the new app, then conclude the new app is worse at being the old app. NewTwos is genuinely shaped differently, and knowing where it differs saves that week.

What to expect by app

From Apple Notes. Closest fit for note-taking, and the big change is days. You will stop naming notes, because most of what you write lands on a date instead. Import brings notes across as lists.

From Notion. Expect much less structure and much less setup. There are no databases, properties or relations. If your Notion use was mostly a wiki with tables, NewTwos is not a replacement. If it was mostly a place you dumped notes and to-dos, it will feel faster.

From Todoist or a to-do app. The big adjustment is that there are no projects with statuses, and nothing turns red. Carry-over replaces due-date triage: unfinished to-dos follow you rather than accumulating as overdue. See carry-over.

From Obsidian. Wikilinks and folders do not carry the same weight. Backlinks exist, folders do not. If your vault relies on a plugin ecosystem, that does not come across at all.

What does not translate

Being blunt about this is more useful than a feature matrix:

  • Folder trees. There are none. Lists are flat, with sublists for genuine nesting.
  • Custom fields and properties. No database columns, no per-item metadata beyond tags, reminders and notes.
  • Complex formatting. Rich text is intentionally light. Tables, embeds and multi-column layouts do not exist.
  • Automations inside the app. Recurring reminders and daily list resets exist. Rule-based automation lives in Zapier or the API instead.

A migration that works

    Do not import first

    Use NewTwos for a week on new material only. You need to know how days feel before you decide where old material should live.

    Import the archive, not the system

    Bring your notes across as lists. Do not try to recreate your old folder structure.

    Leave old to-dos behind

    Import the reference material, retype the handful of to-dos that are genuinely live. Most were never going to happen.

Tips

  • Resist making lists for the first two weeks. Almost everyone makes too many and then abandons them.
  • If you miss one specific thing from the old app, say so rather than working around it. It is often a setting.
