A tour of the app
A quick naming tour, so that when a page says "the edit bar" you know what it means.
Why you'd care
Most confusion in documentation is vocabulary, not concepts. This page exists purely so the rest of the docs can name a thing once and move on.
The parts
| Name | What it is |

| Capture bar | The always-available input for writing a thing. Sometimes called the WTD bar, for "write things down". |
| Nav bar | The main navigation. On mobile it is the row of up to five tabs at the bottom. |
| Side menu | The fuller list of views, including everything the nav bar does not have room for. |
| Week bar | The strip of seven days at the top of Today. |
| Edit bar | The row of actions that appears above the keyboard while you are editing a thing. |
| Selection bar | The row of actions that appears when you have selected one or more things. |
| Side panel | On wide screens, a second column that can hold chat, a list, or a timeline. |
| Sublist | A list nested inside another list. |
| Day | A date-titled list that NewTwos makes for you. |
The views
The main ones, each covered in its own page: Today, Lists, Things, Days, Calendar, Reminders, Search, Home, Bookmarks, Stars, Tags, Memories, Chat, Map, Trash. Which appear in your nav bar is configurable.
Going further
Nothing here is fixed. The nav bar, the side menu, the edit bar, the selection bar and swipe actions can all be rearranged, and which view the app opens on is a setting. The defaults are a starting point rather than a design opinion you have to live with.
On wide screens there is more. A persistent sidebar, list tabs, and a right-hand panel appear once there is room. Nothing is hidden on a phone that is not also reachable there, it is just arranged differently.
Tips
- Learn the capture bar and Today first. Almost everything else is optional for the first few weeks.
- If a view in your nav bar is one you never open, replace it. Nav space is the most valuable real estate in the app.
