Why you'd care
A swipe is the cheapest gesture on a phone. Binding it to the action you perform most turns a two-tap job into a flick.
What you can bind
Complete, delete, move, copy, info, indent, outdent, tag, star, reminder, note, quote, code, memory, focus, Google search, Ask AI, and select.
Each direction is set independently.
Choosing well
The defaults are select and complete, which are good defaults.
If you change one, the usual winner is move, because moving is the most common action that currently takes a menu.
Turning gestures off
Setting a direction to none disables that swipe.
Setting both to none, along with pull-down, gives you an app with no gestures at all. Some people strongly prefer that, particularly if you trigger swipes by accident while scrolling. It is a supported configuration rather than a degraded one.
Going further
Left-handed mode changes which swipe is comfortable. If you have changed one, revisit the other. See left-handed mode and haptics.
Destructive actions on a swipe are risky. Delete on a swipe will eventually be triggered by accident. Trash makes that recoverable, but it is still worth avoiding.
Tips
- Bind one direction to something destructive-free and useful, like move or tag.
- If you keep swiping by mistake while scrolling, set one direction to none rather than living with it.
