Make it yours
Notifications
Every kind of notification, and what sets each one off.
The categories
| Category | Sent when |
|---|---|
| Reminders | A reminder you set fires. See reminder notifications |
| Calendar events | A synced event is due |
| Helpful notifications | A scheduled nudge. See helpful notifications |
| Profile activity | Someone follows, likes or comments |
| List activity | Something changes on a shared list |
| Mentions | Someone mentions you |
| Digests and collaboration. See email digests |
The principle
Each category is independent, so you can keep the ones you asked for and drop the ones that arrive on their own.
For most people that means: reminders on, everything social off. Reminders are things you scheduled. The rest is other people's activity.
Going further
System permission comes first. Nothing here works if notifications are denied at the operating system level, and no in-app setting can override that.
Shared lists can be silenced individually. A busy household list should not notify thirty times a day, and silencing it per list is better than turning off the whole category. See Settings Notifications List activities.
On the web, permission is per browser, in Settings Notifications Browser notifications.
Settings that change this
- Settings Notifications Browser notifications enables web notifications.
- Settings Notifications Profile activities follows, likes and comments.
- Settings Notifications List activities shared list changes.
- Settings Notifications Mention emails emails when mentioned.
- Settings Notifications Collab updates collaboration emails.
- Settings Notifications Weekly recap the weekly email.
Tips
- Turn off social notifications on day one unless you publish. They are the category most likely to make you mute the app entirely.
- If notifications feel overwhelming, reduce the number of reminders rather than silencing the category. Silencing reminders defeats the point of setting them.
