Keep a journal

iPhoneiPadAndroidWebMacWindowsLinuxWatchUpdated 2026-08-18

A journal that lives on your days, with nothing to set up.

The scenario

You want to write about your life, and every dedicated journalling app has eventually failed because it was a separate place you had to remember to open.

Set it up once

  1. 1

    Turn on today's prompt

A question removes the blank page on ordinary days. Settings Appearance & Accessibility Show today's prompt. See today's prompt.

  2. 2

    Turn on past years

So what you wrote last year appears above today. Settings Appearance & Accessibility Show past years. See on this day.

  3. 3

Give days a background you like

You will look at this page daily. See dressing up a day.

The daily rhythm

Write one line about the day, on the day. Not a to-do, a line about what happened.

Answer the prompt if it suits, ignore it if not. Take a photo of something ordinary once in a while, since photos are the strongest memory trigger there is.

That is the whole practice. Thirty seconds.

Make it yours

  • If you write at length, use the Capture view instead of the bar, so the list is not in front of you. See the Capture view.
  • If you write at night, watch the date. Anything after midnight lands on the new day.
  • If some days are private, keep them out of memories so they are not handed back unprompted. See memories.

What this looks like after a month

Not much, honestly. A month of one-line entries is a month of one-line entries.

The payoff is at a year, when past years starts returning something every day and you discover that the entries you value are almost never the ones you thought were significant. That is the argument for writing the boring line rather than waiting for a worthwhile one.
