Today's prompt

Today's prompt is an optional question at the top of Today, for the days when you open the app and have nothing to say.

Why you'd care

The hardest day to write is the ordinary one. A prompt removes the blank page by giving you something specific to answer, and answering it takes about fifteen seconds.

It is off for some people and essential for others, which is why it is a setting rather than a default behaviour.

The 60-second version

Turn it on in Settings Appearance & Accessibility Show today's prompt. A question appears at the top of Today. Tap it to answer, and your answer becomes an ordinary thing on that day.

Going further

Answers are just things. There is no separate journal store. Whatever you write in response lives on the day like anything else, so it is searchable, movable and comes back as a memory later.

Skipping is free. The prompt is not a streak and there is nothing to break. Ignoring it has no consequence.

A year later it pays off. Prompt answers are the entries people most enjoy getting back, because they capture ordinary days that would otherwise leave no trace. See past years.

Tips

  • Answer in one line. A prompt that becomes an essay is one you will stop answering.
  • If a prompt does not suit the day, ignore it rather than forcing it.
