Capture hands-free
Capture with your hands and eyes busy.
The scenario
Your best thinking happens away from a screen, and none of it gets written down.
Set it up once
- 1
A Siri Shortcut
So you can speak a thing without touching the phone. See Siri and Shortcuts.
- 2
A lock screen widget
One tap, no unlocking into an app. See widgets.
- 3
The Watch app, if you have one
Built for exactly this. See Apple Watch.
The rhythm
One thought: dictate it. See talk instead of type.
A few minutes of thinking: use Ramble, which splits what you said into separate things rather than one paragraph you would have to clean up. This is the one that changes walking. See Ramble. Plus
Say the date out loud and it becomes a reminder. "Call the garage Thursday morning" works. See dates NewTwos finds for you.
Make it yours
- Turn on auto-tagging so voice captures are separable from typed ones for a weekly tidy. See auto-tagging by source.
- Accept the transcription is rough. It only has to be good enough to recognise later, and search is forgiving.
What this looks like after a month
You capture on walks and in the car, which is material that previously did not exist at all. The transcriptions are imperfect and it does not matter.
