Publishing makes a list or a thing readable by anyone with the link.
Why you'd care
A published list is a webpage you did not have to build. Reading lists, recommendations, packing lists, guides. Anything you would otherwise retype into a message every time someone asks.
The 60-second version
Publish the list, then share the link. Anyone can read it. Nobody can edit it unless you separately invite them.
What publishing does
- Makes the list readable at a public URL
- Gives it a preview card when the link is shared
- Optionally lists it on your profile
Showing on your profile is a separate choice from being published. A list can be public-by-link without appearing anywhere people browse.
What it does not do
- It does not grant editing. That is collaboration, and it is separate. See collaborate on a list.
- It does not publish your other lists. Publishing is per list.
- It does not make you findable unless you also choose to show it on your profile.
Going further
Unpublishing is immediate, though anyone who already copied the content still has it. Treat publishing as irreversible in the way that all publishing is.
Check for private things first. A list you wrote casually may contain something you would not put on a webpage. Read it through before publishing rather than after.
Tips
- Publish the finished thing, not the working list. Keep a private list and publish a cleaned copy.
- Publishing without profile listing is the right default for something you are sending to one person.
