Following someone puts their published lists in your following feed.
Why you'd care
The category feed is a firehose. Following is how it becomes a small number of people whose lists are actually worth reading.
What following shows you
Their published lists only. Following gives no access to anything private, and it is not a connection to their account.
Requests
Depending on their settings, following may need approving. Your own followers can require approval too, which is the right setting if you publish occasionally and would rather know who is reading.
Going further
Following is one-directional. They are not notified into your material and nothing of yours becomes visible by following them.
Unfollowing is silent. Nobody is told.
Activity notifications are separate. Whether you hear about follows and likes is a notification setting, not a social one. See Settings Notifications Profile activities.

- Settings Advanced Feed turns the public side off entirely.
Tips
- Follow fewer than ten people. The value collapses beyond that, the same as any feed.
- If you do not want a social layer at all, turn the public side off rather than curating it.
