Storage and cache
Your things live on the server and are cached on each device you use.
What is where
On the server: everything, which is what makes sync and recovery possible.
On the device: what you have opened, so it is readable offline and instant to open. See writing when you are offline.
Photos are the bulk of both. Text takes almost no room.
Clearing the cache
Settings Data Clear cache drops the local copy. Nothing is lost, since it all comes back from the server as you use the app.
Worth doing if NewTwos is taking a surprising amount of device storage, or if something looks stale in a way that a restart does not fix.
The cost is that the next few opens are slower, and lists you have not reopened are unavailable offline until you do.
Going further
Clearing the cache is not deleting. It only removes the local copy of data that also exists on the server.
On an anonymous account it is different. With no login, the device copy is the only copy. Do not clear anything until you have created a login. See turn an anonymous account into a real one.
Trash counts. Deleted things still take room until they are cleared. See Settings Data Delete trash after 30 days.
Settings that change this
- Settings Data Clear cache drops the local copy.
- Settings Data Empty trash permanently removes deleted items.
- Settings Data Delete trash after 30 days sets trash retention.
Tips
- Clear the cache before uninstalling, not as routine maintenance. It is a troubleshooting step.
- If storage is genuinely a problem, photos are the cause. Text never is.
