You can sign in with an email and password, with Google, or with Apple.

Why you'd care

Signing in is what makes your things exist somewhere other than one device. Everything else in this chapter depends on it.

The methods

MethodNotes
Email and passwordWorks everywhere, including where the others are unavailable
GoogleOne tap, no password to keep
AppleOne tap, and can hide your real email address

Use the same method every time. Signing in with Google when you originally used email creates a different account, which is the most common cause of "my things are missing".

Anonymous accounts

You can start using NewTwos without signing in at all. That account is real and your things are saved, but they live on that device.

Nothing syncs and nothing is recoverable if the device is lost, until you create a login. See turn an anonymous account into a real one.

Going further

Signing out does not delete anything on a signed-in account. Your things are on the server and come back when you sign in.

Signing out of an anonymous account is different, and is close to losing it. Create a login first.

Tips

  • If you use Apple's hide-my-email, note the address it generates. Support cannot identify you without it.
  • Sign in on a second device early. It is the cheapest backup there is.

If it's not working

My things are gone after signing in. Almost always a second account created via a different sign-in method. Sign out and try the other one.

See I cannot sign in.
