Remember
Memorize
Memorize schedules a thing to come back on a widening ladder, so you actually learn it.
Why you'd care
Rereading does not create memory. Recalling at increasing intervals does, and that is a scheduling problem rather than a willpower one.
Because it works on your own things, there is nothing to build. Anything you already wrote can become something you know.
The ladder
Intervals of roughly 1, 3, 7, 16, 35 and 90 days. Recall it successfully and it moves up. Fail and it drops back down for more frequent exposure.
That widening is the entire mechanism, and it is why six repetitions spread over three months beats an hour of rereading.
The 60-second version
Mark a thing to memorize. It comes back on schedule in the Review hub, and each successful recall pushes the next appearance further out.
Going further
One fact per thing. A thing containing three facts cannot be scored, because you will know one and not the others. Split it. See return, join and split.
Write the prompt, not the answer. A thing that reads as a question is testable. One that reads as a statement is just something to reread.
Memorize or memory? Memorize is deliberate learning on a schedule. Memory is a pleasant random resurfacing. Use memorize for things you will be tested on by life. See memory.
Settings that change this
- Settings Lists & Things Remember & review time sets the time of day reviews are delivered.
Tips
- Add three or four things a week. Adding fifty at once produces a review load you will abandon.
- Vocabulary, names, and the handful of numbers you keep looking up are the best candidates.
