Why you'd care
Some things genuinely belong in two places. A to-do that is both today's work and part of a project. An item that is on the shopping list and in the recipe.
Copying gives you two things that immediately drift apart. Cloning gives you one thing visible twice, so checking it off in either place checks it off in both.
The 60-second version
Web, Mac, Windows, and Linux
Hold ⌥ + drag while dragging a thing to another list.
iPhone, iPad, and Android
Use the clone action from the thing's menu or the selection bar.
Going further
Sync is bidirectional and complete. Text, completion, tags, reminders and notes all stay in step. There is no primary copy.
Deleting one side does not delete the other. Removing a clone from a list removes that appearance. The thing survives wherever else it lives.
Clone or link? A clone is the same thing in two lists. A mention is a pointer from one list to another. If you want to tick it off in both places, clone. If you just want to be able to get there, link. See mentions and backlinks.
Use it sparingly. A dozen clones is a system. A hundred is a way to be confused about where anything lives.
Tips
- The best use is a project to-do that also needs to be on today. Clone rather than move, and finishing it updates the project.
- If you find yourself cloning the same thing into five lists, a tag is probably the better tool.
If it's not working
Alt-drag moved instead of cloning. Clone is a Plus feature, and without it the modifier falls back to a plain move.
One side did not update. Both devices need to have synced. Open the app on the stale one.
