Why you'd care
Finished lists are the main source of clutter. A trip you took, a project that shipped, a move you completed. Deleting them loses the record, and keeping them visible buries the lists you actually use.
Archiving is the third option, and it is the right one almost every time.
The 60-second version
Press ⌘⇧⌥A on a list. It disappears from the Lists view and stays fully intact.
Going further
Archived material is kept out of ordinary search. That is the point: old lists do not crowd current results. There is a separate archive search for when you actually want them.
It is reversible and lossless. Unarchiving returns the list exactly as it was, with every thing, tag and reminder.
Archive or trash? Archive is "finished, keep it". Trash is "gone, and it will be deleted". If there is any chance you will want to read it again, archive. See trash.
Archive all at once. There is a bulk archive in account settings for a genuine reset, which is far better than deleting everything.
Tips
- Archive on the day a project ends, not months later. The Lists view stays useful only if you do it promptly.
- If you catch yourself scrolling past the same dead list every day, that is the signal.
