Where new things go
The rule is simple: if you did not say where, it went to Today.
Why you'd care
"Where did that go" is the most common early confusion in NewTwos, and it has a short answer. Knowing it removes the urge to pick a destination every time you write, which is the whole point of the capture bar.
The rules, in order
- Inside a list? It lands in that list.
- Looking at a day? It lands on that day.
- Otherwise it lands on Today.
- Unless you set a default list, in which case captures from outside a list go there instead.
Integrations follow the same rules. Anything arriving from Siri, email, Slack or the API lands on Today unless a default is set.
Changing the default
Settings Appearance & Accessibility Default add to list sets the destination for anything captured outside a list.
Going further
Most people should not set one. Today is a good inbox precisely because it empties itself: carry-over moves the unfinished parts along, and the rest becomes a record. A custom default turns that into a list you have to process.
It is worth setting for one specific job. If you are collecting for a single project for a few weeks, pointing capture at that list removes a move from every capture. Change it back afterwards.

Tips
- If you cannot find something you just captured, check this setting before searching.
- Auto-tagging by integration is a good compromise: everything still lands on Today, but you can tell what arrived from email.
